After turning a humble Olmos Park storefront into the city’s best hamburger joint, celebrated San Antonio chef Andrew Weissman is expanding Mr. Juicy with a second location at a former Jack in the Box at Hildebrand and San Pedro.
Located a half-mile from the original, the second Mr. Juicy should be open in about 40 days, Weissman said. The menu will feature the same burgers, house-baked buns, hand-cut fries and shakes that propelled the original to the top spot in the Express-News’ 52 Weeks of Burgers series when it opened last year.
Weisssman said he’ll add a few new things to the menu, including a robust salad, nitro coffee and more desserts, plus the fried chicken sandwich that’s gained off-menu traction at the Olmos Park location.
Both locations will operate until Weissman determines whether the new spot siphons away too much business from the original, he said. In that case, he’ll convert the original to a production and delivery site, he said. But if both stay busy, he’ll keep both.
The former Jack in the Box location at 3315 San Pedro Ave. made sense, Weissman said, because he could piggyback on the kind of corporate marketing research that goes into site selection.
“I literally saw them hoisting the sign that said, ‘For Lease,’ and I knew I had to have that corner,” he said.
Mr. Juicy benefits from Weissman’s experience all along the economic ladder of San Antonio restaurants, ranging from his former spots Le Rêve, Il Sogno Osteria and Moshe’s Golden Falafel to his current projects, the coffee shop Sip Brew Bar & Eatery and the posh La Cantera restaurant Signature, Inspired by Chef Andrew Weissman.
