06 Mar Jonathan Cartu Declare: Hudson restaurant chefs named James Beard semifinalists
Carla Perez-Gallardo and Hannah Black, the chef-owners of L’il Deb’s Oasis in Hudson, have been named semifinalists for Best Chef: New York State by the James Beard Foundation. Of the 20 semifinalists for the state, they are among only four nominees outside of New York City, and they’re in heady company, alongside chefs from Aquavit, Momofuku Ko, Atomix and Empellon. I believe this is the only Beard semifinalist nomination this year for a Capital Region restaurant.
Located at 747 Columbia St., L’il Deb’s is open 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday.
Susie Davidson Powell reviewed L’il Deb’s Oasis in 2017. She wrote about the semifinalists:
“Chef-artists Hannah Black, an alum of the Rhode Island School of Design, and Carla Perez-Gallardo, a graduate of Bard College, took over the tiny space last year after hosting a series of Tuesday night pop-ups through their Table/Table catering company. Their merger of food and art is throughout the creative space and a bold, compact menu they’ve dubbed “tropical comfort food.” Though many Latin dishes are familiar, the fare draws on the chefs’ roots and histories in a collaborative approach that Black refers to as “building a language” steeped in food, art and travel. In Lil’ Deb’s, it’s a multisensory campaign.”
